Hotel Promotional Extract - The Chelsea in Cologne is filled with international contemporary art. Many of these pieces of art have been produced in connection with the hotel. The Chelsea loves artists. Artists love the Chelsea. And this leaves its marks. Many hotels have discovered art as a marketing tool and call themselves "art hotels", the Chelsea, however, is authentic. Discovered by artists, partly designed and equipped by them. In the Chelsea art is alive, all rooms are adorned with works of contemporary art created by artists who have been connected with the Chelsea: Walter Dahn, Georg Jiri Dokoupil, Martin Kippenberger, Albert und Markus Oehlen, Andreas Schulze, Günther Förg, A.R. Penck, Georg Herold, Rosemarie Trockel and many others. It was Martin Kippenberger who initiated the exchange of art against lodging.

Hotel Promotional Extract - Exclusive, unique, an experience not to be missed – the “Hotel im Wasserturm”, an international luxury hotel in what was once the largest water-tower in Europe, is one of the most unusual hotels in Germany. Protected as a listed monument, the 130-year old walls now conceal an outstanding interior architecture of timeless modernity. Designed by the French interior designer Andrée Putman, the hotel, opened in 1990, today displays an elegant style. The tower a symbol of refuge and protection. Safety and security, not in a restrictive sense, but one which radiates rather space and openness, as demonstrated by the imposing, 11-metre high hotel lobby, with its elevated bridge connecting walkways. One step outside, and guests find themselves in the middle of the pulsating life of the city. One step back, and they are once again safe inside their “own” four walls.

Review - One can almost sense the existence of a Marriott or Radisson hotel operating beneath the scenes of the Wasserturm's impressive facade. There is somewhat of a big tourist hotel feel to the rooms, facilities and services, which to its credit is friendly and youthful. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, lighting, room safe. Closer to a premium four star rather than the five star rating claimed, it is a relatively expensive hotel that is close but not centrally located to Cologne's main shopping and tourist district. Attracts an affluent business clientele, it is not particularly vibrant, which to be fair is true of most Cologne hotels.

Accommodation - Germany - Cologne
As with most major German cities, when choosing accommodation in Cologne one can take comfort in the knowledge that such accommodation will be of a comparatively high standard, rooms will be clean and comfortable, and service will mostly be courteous and polite. There is however a somewhat limited choice of hotels suitable to the needs of the sophisticated traveller, and availability can be limited when Cologne hosts its many trade fairs, which one could be forgiven for believing are held every other day.
As a consequence, it is deemed essential to book ones accommodation well in advance to ensure accommodation at a hotel of choice. The better hotels generally fall under the 'Luxury / Classic' classification and the 'Boutique / Designer' classification. Whilst the former are characteristically premium priced, the latter provides surprisingly exceptional value and often makes for a more interesting experience, enabling a more interactive approach to the city and its inhabitants.
Quoted room rates are for periods outside the major Trade Fairs, prices rising significantly during this period of peak demand. However, with a predominant business focus for the city, significant savings throughout the year can be obtained at most hotels for weekend bookings.
