With an excess of 300 hotels available in and around Munich, it can seem at times a daunting and complex task to sort through the multitude of questionable accommodation in order to discover that worthy of your discerning needs. More than most, this is a city where a good hotel is fundamental to enjoying one's stay. Fortunately, excellent accommodation does not always equate to expensive accommodation, with a range of quality boutique hotels available at moderately reasonable prices.
When staying in Munich, it is important to consider the season of travel, particularly to ensure premises are air-conditioned for the summer months when the climate can become uncomfortably stifling. One must also be considerate to the many festivals and events which seem to occur endlessly as restrictions on availability are common as are significant rate increases throughout peak periods. Periods of greatest demand are throughout February for the ISPO Sports Fashion Trade Show, IHM Crafts Show in March and Oktoberfest in late September. If travelling throughout these periods it is essential to book months in advance.
The best hotels are situated within the ring road that surrounds the older city, in close proximity to Munich's finer shops, restaurants and sites. The compactness of the city ensures that all such attractions are within close walking distance.

Review - A truly delightful small hotel of exceptional warmth and charm. Relatively unknown, the Maxmilian is popularly frequented by opera singers and discerning television personalities who continue to enjoy the relative anonymity. Recently renovated, the rooms are exceptionally comfortable, spacious, modern and clean, all grouped around a very pleasant internal garden where it is possible to forget that one is situated in the very heart of Munich. Whilst Hochbrückenstraße is not the most attractive of streets, the location nevertheless is quite superb and with the facilities of an apartment the Maximilian successfully encapsulates the atmosphere of a home away from home. Of note is the outgoing service provided by the very friendly and extremely accommodating staff. Ideal equally for a short stay or extended vacation, the Maximilian comes highly recommended.

Review - A brilliant hotel, fashionable, stylish, modern, clean and comfortable - this is where the beautiful people stay. Your travel agent wont be able to book it, there is no affiliation, there doesn't need to be. Interior design features walls of Grablau stone, Mooreiche oak paneling and furniture and delightfully voyeuristic glass fronted bathrooms. Breakfast is superb and the cocktail bar is considered one of the best in the city, a destination point for smart locals wanting to relax at the end of the working day. Albeit the rooms are not overly spacious and function can at times seem to follow form. Location is excellent and service is good for a hotel of this type. If you have the means, be sure to book one of the courtyard apartments which are stylishly appointed, exceptionally spacious and would be considered remarkable value at twice the price.

Review - The transformation of this former dreary 1960's office building into a modern designer hotel has been stylishly executed, a result that has endeared it to a young fashion and design clientele. The level of service is refined, the decor characterised by muted colours and restrained opulence. The rooms are perhaps better suited to a short business trip, being a little on the smaller size, but they are efficiently arranged and quiet. The natural breakfast buffet is somewhat of a treat, offering a healthy start to the day, drinks on the rooftop terrace at night completing the package. Situated just outside the central city ring road, the location is a pleasant five minute stroll to Maximilianstrasse and is in close proximity to a number of excellent restaurants and bars.

Hotel Promotional Extract - a charming hotel located in the center of Munich. Interesting local color between Gartnerplatz and Sendlinger Tor Platz. Friendly staff cares about the well being of the valued guests. Most of the rooms show to the quiet patio. Its a pity that you don't find hotels like this more often in Munich.

Review - A small hotel, almost simplistic in its graces and exhibiting a stylish somewhat arty charm that is much appreciated by actors, photographers and fashion designers. Decor is principally functional and uncomplicated, a modern interpretation of classical Italian design - if that makes sense. Most rooms overlook an inner courtyard which imparts the hotel with a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere. Service is provided with genuine sincerity and the inclusive breakfast is very good. The style of accommodation is ultimately casual. The hotel is situated towards the outer area of the inner city in a location that is not especially vibrant. Perfectly ideal for a quick overnight stay or short business trip.

Review - The level of satisfaction obtained from a stay at the Opera is highly dependent upon the room obtained. Lets deal with the negatives, some rooms are looking tired and many of the bathrooms are small and in need of updating. These matters aside, this is an intimate hotel, luxuriously appointed and located in a quite, chic residential neighbourhood. Within its walls is hidden a delightful courtyard, adding to the general feel and charm, and the breakfast is very good. With a good room this can be a wonderful hotel to spend two or three nights. Located a comfortable five to ten minute walk from Munich's main attractions, it provides a pleasant base for those seeking a quieter repose.

Review - A charming boutique hotel delightfully furnished with an eclectic range of antique and period furniture. Rooms are elegantly appointed providing sophisticated old world charm. The hotel library / sitting room offers a relaxed escape following a days hard sightseeing. The sunlit breakfast room is a pleasant setting for a fine breakfast spread and the staff are efficient and courteous, although not overtly friendly. This is a hotel of exceptional value, perhaps the only significant drawback being the lack of air-conditioning which is essential for coping with Munich's stiflingly hot summers. The location is a good ten to fifteen minute walk from the city centre, situated amongst the residential tranquility of the Lehel district. Not particularly vibrant or youthful, this is not the point, it provides comfortable accommodation for a discerning clientele at sensible prices.

Review - It was recently suggested that to experience the true essence of Munich one must stay only at the Bayerischer Hof. This is a monumental hotel situated in the former Montgelas Palace and offers the level of sophistication and service one would expect has been on offer for the last 100 years - which incidentally seems to coincide with the average age of the staff. This is not a youthful hotel, appealing to a more mature and established clientele. Rooms are luxuriously appointed and spacious, service is professionally courteous, the location ideally situated close to Munich's better shops and restaurants, and the vast lobby provides a comfortable escape for the weary traveller. Its reputation as one of Bavaria's finest luxury hotels is well founded.

Review - The most famous hotel in Munich and the destination point for opera greats, rock idols, movie stars and fashion luminaries - oh, and Russia's new Millionaires with the obligatory entourage of glamorous east European escorts. The Kempinski continues to attract an eccentric and demanding mix of clientele. Rooms are attractively appointed and functional, however those at the lower price point can seem poor value and are surprisingly small. Ultimately, this is not a hotel to book a standard room, spend and the experience will be more to your expectations. The hotel imparts an overall feeling of grandness, to stay here can be an event in itself. Service is as to be expected, efficient, courteous and professional, and as also to be expected, food and beverage pricing is outrageous. If I were to be unkind I would sum this hotel up as 'a little piece of Moscow in the very heart of Bavaria' but to do so is to miss the point entirely. Broaden your focus from that which is so blatantly obvious and you will discover that this is a fabulous hotel, situated in an impeccable location and worthy of its reputation.

Review - The quintessential small luxury hotel, fashionable, refined and opulent, without pretentiousness. It is little wonder that many actors and entertainers of of discriminating standards and international renown choose to stay at the Mandarin whilst in Munich. With one and a half employees for each guest, the standard of service is exceptional, and with the average age of those employees in the early to mid 20's there is an atmosphere of youthfulness and energy not often found within a hotel of this status. The rooms are enormous, so much so that some appear wanting for furniture. The beds are exceptionally comfortable and the spacious marble bathrooms a delight. The locations is also excellent, a short stroll to the best that Munich has to offer. In summer the rooftop terrace and pool provide for a delightful escape with unsurpassed vistas over the city's rooftops.
