Change and improvements to St. Petersburg’s hotel scene in recent years has corresponded directly to the city’s rise in popularity as a major international tourist destination. The resulting construction and development of new hotels and major renovation of existing establishments offering vastly improved standards of accommodation, contrasting significantly from the pre-Perestroika days of government regulated tourism.
Choice however continues to remain limited. With an estimated 30,000 rooms available to satisfy the requirements of over 2 million foreign visitors a year demand continues to fall well short of supply, impacting significantly upon prices.
St. Petersburg’s hotel’s can be broadly categorised into two groups, with a significant variation of standards between them. Most of the better hotels maintain an international affiliation, the relatively high standard of service and hospitality reflective of the premium prices charged. At the opposite end of the spectrum exist the Soviet-era hotels, monstrous towers built in the late 70’s and early 80’s catering today to British and US organized tour groups. Facilities within this category are often inferior, the décor dated and service inconsistent. Situated out of the center and distanced from the principal attractions, these hotels should be avoided. Better hotels tend to be located in the upper Nevsky Prospekt district.
Peak season encompasses May through September, accommodation at a premium in the weeks leading up to the White Nights festival in late June. A rapid decline in tourism throughout the winter months can provide for significant discounts and improved availability.

Hotel Promotional Extract - Corinthia Nevskij Palace, a modern international five-star hotel is the result of the renovation of two historic 19th century buildings in the heart of Saint-Petersburg on the city`s main boulevard, Nevsky Prospect. The award-winnig refurbishment was completed in the spring of 1993 and the hotel was opened for business on May 1st. It combines two buildings, a neo-classical mansion built by Arthur Lange in 1861 and the former home of the Samoilov family which overlooks Stremyannaya street.
