City Guide - France - Lyon
The second largest city in France, capital of the Rhône-Alpes and situated at the crossroads of Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, Lyon is a city of vast cultural appeal, albeit somewhat limited in sophistication. With development predating Roman times, it is an historically interesting city with a strong emphasis on religion and trade.
For the mass of tour groups repeatedly converging upon the city, it is the nostalgic medieval charm that continues to draw focus, most clearly evident amongst the considerable remnants of Renaissance architecture which feature imposingly throughout the city. The general atmosphere is non pretentious and charming, the sense of modernism and dynamism non existent, contributing factors undoubtedly in Lyon being designated one of the few urban centers on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Architecture aside, the city maintains a strong reputation for its thriving arts scene, its Opera house and many fine museums and monuments. However, the fundamental appeal for the sophisticated traveller clearly has to be one of gastronomic indulgence.
